Viana do Castelo Municipal Market

The review and optimisation of the design for the new Municipal Market of Viana do Castelo focused on a large-scale public facility conceived to reinforce the commercial and urban attractiveness of the historic centre and its connection to the waterfront setting. COLUNA supported this work through Integrated Design, carrying out a critical and cross-disciplinary reading of the execution design, with a focus on the overall coherence of the documentation, coordination between architecture, external works and engineering projects, construction clarity of the proposed solutions, and the identification of technical and economic optimisation opportunities with impact on the final construction cost.

Key Challenges
and Solutions Adopted

The intervention focused on a large-scale execution design with a demanding programme, involving architecture, external works and a broad set of engineering projects. The main challenge was to review the design as a coherent whole, ensuring that the documentation produced was sufficiently clear, coordinated and capable of supporting construction.
The review sought to reduce ambiguities, omissions and inconsistencies between written documents, drawings, quantity take-offs and cost estimates, promoting a clearer reading for all parties involved in the works. This approach was particularly relevant in a project with strong interdependence between architecture, infrastructure, technical systems and regulatory requirements.
Without calling into question the original design principles, the review focused on technical, functional and economic aspects that could be improved, with the aim of strengthening the project documentation and identifying opportunities for construction rationalisation and reduction of the final contract value.
More than a formal verification exercise, the work was structured as a decision-support tool, helping clarify priorities, reinforce coordination with the architectural team and create better conditions for tendering, procurement and construction.

Services provided

As part of Integrated Design, COLUNA carried out a technical and integrated review of the execution design, covering architecture, external works and engineering projects, with a focus on regulatory compliance, coordination between disciplines, documentary clarity, review of quantity take-offs and critical analysis of the solutions with technical and financial impact. The work aimed to reinforce the overall coherence of the process and improve the project’s ability to support construction with less risk of uncertainty, conflict or avoidable cost. Outcome: a more robust, coordinated and optimised design basis, prepared to support construction with greater technical and financial control.
